Why Cobalt Exists
HSS twist drills follow DIN338RN. M2 (≈5% molybdenum, 4% chromium) is the economical all-rounder for carbon steel, aluminium and alloys. M35 adds ≈5% cobalt, raising red-hardness so the bit stays hard at the high heat stainless generates — that is why M35 is the default for stainless and hard-to-machine metals.
Buying Guidance for Distributors
- Mild steel, aluminium, wood, plastic → M2: FANXI 900 (bright) or 910 (TiN-coated for longer life).
- Stainless (inox), cast iron, hardened steel → M35: FANXI 990 (amber) or 992 (CrTiAlN for max heat resistance).
- Tight spaces → 902 DIN1897RN short series; deep holes → 917 extra-long.
