The Shank Difference
Both SDS Plus and SDS Max are slotted drive shanks for rotary hammers — no chuck key, hammer-action energy transfers straight to the bit. The difference is size and torque: SDS Plus is the 10 mm class for light-to-medium masonry; SDS Max is the 18 mm class for heavy demolition and big holes.
SDS Plus — The Everyday Concrete Bit
- Hole diameter roughly 4–32 mm, depth up to ~400 mm.
- Perfect for concrete, brick, stone in walls and floors.
- FANXI pick: 2017 SDS Plus with a 4-cutter (cross) tip that resists binding in rebar, or 2021 for general work.
SDS Max — Heavy Demolition
- Hole diameter 20 mm up to 52 mm+ and much deeper, plus chisels and breakers.
- Use when SDS Plus bogs down or the hole is simply too big.
- FANXI pick: 5016 / 5017 SDS Max for 30 mm+ concrete and through-wall work.
Quick Rule
Drilling anchor holes, conduit and light concrete → SDS Plus. Core drilling, plumbing chases and demolition → SDS Max. Never force an SDS Plus bit into a Max hammer — the shanks are not interchangeable.
